🚆 First Stops and New Horizons: A Day in LA with Our Refugee Career Pathways Program
The RCP Group in front of the Disney Concert Hall in DTLA.
On Sunday morning of April 6th, 2025, 22 participants in HMI’s Refugee Career Pathways (RCP) Program gathered at the Downtown Riverside Metrolink Station with the help of HMI’s dear transportation volunteers. For many, it was the start of a day full of firsts: their first time on a train, their first visit to Los Angeles, and their first chance to experience the city’s cultural landmarks not as outsiders—but as welcomed guests.
Led by our incredible Career Navigators—Tomma, Tahira, and Teresa—along with HMI Grant Writer Kaycee, the day’s journey wasn’t just about sightseeing. It was about connection, confidence, and mobility. By introducing participants to the public transportation system, we hoped to increase their comfort and autonomy when navigating unfamiliar places—a vital skill for job seekers entering new industries and environments.
But beyond practical learning, this trip was also about joy.
🗺️ The Journey
The group boarded the Metrolink at 8:30 AM and began the scenic ride into Los Angeles. After arriving at Union Station, they made their way to Olvera Street, where participants explored LA’s historic core and browsed cultural shops and artisan goods.
At Grand Central Market, each participant received a $20 food voucher—an intentional decision rooted in dignity and equity. Many of our RCP clients experience food insecurity, and we wanted this meal to be something more than just sustenance. We wanted it to be a moment of choice. A chance to explore, to taste something new, and to enjoy lunch in the same way any Angeleno might: with curiosity and freedom.
From there, the group visited The Broad Museum, stopped for photos at Disney Concert Hall, and wrapped up the afternoon at The Last Bookstore, where they browsed shelves filled with stories, dreams, and futures.
📣 Why This Matters
Every part of this day was designed with intention:
🚌 Transportation access is often a barrier for our participants. Learning how to navigate public transit opens doors to more jobs and greater independence.
🍲 Food equity means more than a free meal—it means having the freedom to choose it yourself.
🏙️ Cultural exposure offers a broader view of the world and one’s place in it.
“Enjoyed train trip because it was my first time traveling in train, the beautiful city of Los Angeles. Thanks to HMI team for arranging the trip and being so generous and helpful. Best regards ❤️”
— Meena, RCP Participant
“I really enjoyed visiting the two museums, The Broad and Avila Adobe, and I learned a lot from them. It was also my first time using the Metrolink, and I enjoyed that experience as well.”
— Fatima, RCP Participant
📊 What Changed in Just One Day
Before the trip, nearly half of our participants had never used public transportation and had no experience navigating Los Angeles or visiting its cultural landmarks.
By the end of the day?
Nearly 100% left feeling confident about using public transit and exploring the city on their own—with over 75% reporting they now feel “good” navigating LA, and the rest reporting “extensive knowledge.”
That’s not just a day trip—it’s a shift in what’s possible.
đź’¬ Gratitude & Next Steps
We’re so proud of our RCP participants for stepping into something new and embracing this experience with open minds and hearts. And we’re deeply grateful to the staff who made it possible—Tomma, Tahira, Teresa, and Kaycee—for their energy, care, and guidance throughout the day.
We covered the cost of this trip—including the $440 in meal vouchers—because we believe in moments like this. If you'd like to help us replenish those funds so we can say yes again to future opportunities, we’d love your support.
This was more than a field trip. It was a first step forward—for 22 incredible individuals building not just careers, but futures filled with confidence, access, and belonging.
